Ask around and see if you can join any communities, and you'd be given a plot of land to build on. There are a lot of nice folks on survival, ask around and I'm sure you'll find a nice team to start with.

If you claim your land right, it's pretty hard to get griefed. And if you do get lava or tree griefed, you can get the griefer banned.
