If your editing videos... try adobe premier, iMovie, or if you want special effect... you could try adobe after effects. With after effects you can add your own effects also. To do that you would need a 3d program. The industry standard 3d program is probably Maya but a free one that is really...

It depends on what your trying to edit. if your editing photos then adobe photo shop Is the way to go... unless your on a budget, then try gimp. gimp is a free image manipulation program.
