How do spawners work?

I've never had a spawner before in skyblock. How do they work. I bought a chicken one and its not spawning anything.

make sure you place the spawner on a grass platform, with a light source. it should work then. if it doesn't, message me again and i'll try to fix it for you

or make it dark in case of some hostile mobs
