Any known damage glitches in 1.8?

I was dueling someone and I got shredded insanely quickly, my maxed out armor snapping after a minute of fighting. It was pretty even hits but I did notice that my opponent was using an axe. while I was using a sword. I had strength, and I'm pretty sure they had strength as well. Does anyone know if there is some damage glitch that could have caused this outcome? Also btw im not saying it was an unfair fight. I'm just curious now.

Thanks! I actually think that might be the reason since my armor dipped so quickly.
