Eating food in Survival

I was playing survival mode on the server and noticed I have lost 4 hunger bars, and so I tried eating a potato. It didnt work, I kept on trying over and over again until I noticed I had carrots in my inventory and I tried that but it still didnt work. I dont wanna lose everything ive gotten cause of a bug and I would appreciate if anyone would try fixing this. I don't know if this is for all foods in the game, though I know that it doesnt work for potatoes and carrots

im on 1.8.9 not 1.12

the server is 1.12 though so it doesn't matter
