Joker is simply a fantastic film, expertly shot and masterfully crafted, beautifully acted, joker is simply outlandish to it’s genre, reinventing a villain that has become so overused he’s nearly just a running joke at this point. In this review I go into minor spoilers in order to further my point. I’m gonna try doing this with a thread due to the writing constraints I have with posts on my profile, so feel free to give some criticism to my reviews as this will be somewhat detailed, but still mediocre as always.
Joker simply had me shellshocked from the opening scene to the end credits, it’s gripping plot and characters made this experience even more remarkable. You are introduced to Arthur Fleck, a mentally challenged man, just barely getting by in life, caring for her sick mother. Arthur adapts a daytime job as a party clown, and even better Arthur has a condition which causes uncontrolled laughter whenever he’s stressed out or unhappy. He has ambitions of becoming a standup comedian one day, drooling over his idol Murray Franklin who is like the Jimmy Fallon of this universe.
This movie goes on the journey of this disturbed man desirably holding onto his very little sanity that he has left. He’s been neglected all his life against the world that beats him down over and over again, it’s revengeful nature of Gotham City, forces the worst in Arthur bringing him closer to physical and mental collapse. Whilst speaking about how society has tore him down especially in the last few scenes there’s a hint of anger and sadness, every word is tearful and uncontrolled, lashing out on a world that has torn him down his whole life, and in the end he embraces the persona of joker fully, fully breaking his mental sanity.
I also love how each and every struggle he faces we see Arthur dancing and trying to stay that bit sane, but in the end his sanity breaks and we finally see him dance down the stairs, it’s meaning depicts his transformation into madness. The rich in this movie are portrayed as arrogant, self-less and most of all uncaring of society, gotham is in the brink of ruins in this movie, only to be brought to ruins by Arthur's actions, protests occur and the rich continue to advertise their own ideology. You never really understand what their intentions are, including Murray Franklin, we see him make fun of Arthurs standup acts making laughs and jabs at him, we never really know as the movie tells the story in his point of view, Arthur sees Murray as his idol, his admirer, nothing else. We never know and so it brings me to my last and final remarks, this is a movie about society failing to understand these people and eachother, failing to see who we really are as human beings, which creates people like Arthur, broken souls that are so disconnected from reality that they can’t understand who people are and who he even is meant to be.
The acting from Joaquin Phoenix is simply remarkable, able to go from a worthless nothing to a murderous evil type character in a matter of a scene, his movement and his overall persona in this film is quite simply fantastic and I could not say enough good things about him in this film. Again let me know if you have any feedback regarding my reviews, anyways thanks a lot as always.
