One gloomy Saturday night I soared twitter in hopes I would get some amazing encouragement to watch Master of the universe by our activists, sorry I mean movie critics, with disastrous review scores, backlash firing over from across the universe to Kevin Smith I thought it was a no brainer really! And by the time it was over and the credits rolled my fears were confirmed and began writing with great frustration, allow me to explain.
Master of the universe is everything wrong with modern hollywood, pandering to a audience that is non-existent, it’s five episodes butchers everything that made the classic such a compelling viewing experience, they actually manage to make He-man, one of the most iconic animated characters to come out of television into a background character along side feminist power lady.
Every male character in this show is portrayed as weak, pathetic, self obdenent just begging to be put in their place by their female analogue, and it’s not helped by the theoretical characters in this show. They are the most unlikeable bunch of characters ever since I glared my eyes on Captain Marvel. Every male character is broken down, humiliated by all the three leads.
Teela is an overpowered, female empowerment whipping stone. She’s arrogant, self absorbed, and needs to be told how powerful she is every five minutes. She spends the entire time complaining how she could be so much more without those pesky men. Her character design is so obnoxiously bad, her design is generic and you see it everywhere in female leads, the manly facial features, the side haircut that every strong woman has, a body physique of a 260 LB man. She also has the audacity to have a chip on her shoulder because Adam kept his secret for the fate of the universe and wouldn’t tell her, some more outstanding writing by Kevin Smith on display.
.The writing and dialogue is actually monstrous, I'd compare this writing to sharknado and I do not make that comparison lightly, it’s dull aggressively trying to shove ‘the message’ down our throats. It’s honestly heartbreaking to see such an iconic show get broken down and torn apart by this, and I can see the sheer frustration faced with fans of the show.
