I've been using 1.8 recently although I used to only use 1.7 before. To fix the blockhitting I use lunar client since they have a built in 1.7 Animations mod which is quite useful.

well honestly it depends, 1.7 is better if your using the completely default client, but if you install optifine on 1.8 it basically gives the same feel as 1.7
Also, personally I use LabyMod, to make it feel like I'm on 1.7 when i'm on 1.8
