is the server down or is it me?
a) I'm on 1.16.5 and can't connect to the server
b)java.net.SocketException: Network Is Unreachable.

Invaded has been classed as a blacklisted server by Mojang since 2018 & Mojang have recently patched the method that allows players to join a blacklisted server on older versions of Minecraft.
At the moment there are only a few ways which will allow you to connect to the network. These are:
- Connect through one of our alternative IPs such as def.skeppylovesflipflops.xyz or pvplands.net;
- Using a client such as Lunar Client, however it must be on the list of Allowed Mods/Clients which can be found on our website.

dunno why they said "use a client such as lunar" because i use vanilla as a main now and it works literally just fine
I meant lunar or other clients if you still want to connect to the network with invadedlands.net as vanilla Minecraft blocks that IP.
If you still want to use vanilla Minecraft, you would need to connect with one of the alternative IPs listed in the update post.
