Griefing is only bannable if said grief is penetrating a claim. I understand people being able to lava cast freely is frustrating, but I recommend getting more claim blocks before starting new projects. If your builds are claimed correctly, lava casting won't actually hurt your builds and can be removed fairly easily, unless they claim it.

well the grief went through my claims somehow and i think the person is now banned, but their claim is still there. does that mean i can try to get the grief unclaimed?

No, that person has the chance to appeal and play on the server again. The only way I see them removing claims is if the player can no longer play on the server.
